Peter Tabori: An unsung hero of Camden housing

The Whittington Estate (Highgate New Town)

Wednesday 15th November 2023, 1830-2030

University of Westminster, Marylebone Road

Peter Tabori (1940-2023) is best known for designing the Whittington Estate (also known as Highgate New Town) for the London Borough of Camden, with Ken Adie, under Borough Architect Sydney Cook. The low rise terraces, stepping down the slope of Dartmouth Park Hill, are known to local people as ‘The White Flats’.

Born in Budapest, Tabori came to England in 1956 and studies at the Regent Street Polytechnic (now the University of Westminster) where, among others, he was taught by Richard Rogers. He also worked for Erno Goldfinger and Denys Lasdun (later his judo partner) before joining Camden, and then going on to practice independently.

Friends, colleagues and family will contribute to an evening of reminiscence, including the premiere of the film The White Flats, made by residents of the Whittington Estate. The discussion will also expand to explore the success of the estate and what we can learn from it in the design of housing today.

Speakers: James Dunnett, Professor David Porter, Rachel Stevenson, Professor Mark Swenarton, and Tom Tabori. The evening will be chaired by Jo McCafferty.

An event jointly promoted with The University of Westminster, Levitt Bernstein, David Miller Architects, and C20.
