de Blacam and Meagher formed their practice in 1976. de Blacam had been working with Louis Kahn, and Meagher with Venturi Scott Brown. The practice builds projects for libraries, universities, faith communities, offices, and housing. Their buildings are characterised by a masterful use of stone, brick, and wood. They have won the Royal Academy Architecture Prize, The James Gandon Medal, the RIAI Gold Medal, and they represented Ireland in the Venice Biennale in 2010.
de Blacam & Meagher have forged the linkage from Robin Walker via Louis Kahn and Venturi, Scott-Brown to the current generation of Grafton, O’Donnell & Tuomey and others. Niall will explore the work of this seminal Irish firm which has been pivotal in influencing the direction and reach of architecture in Ireland and beyond.
Níall McLaughlin studied under Shane de Blacam at University College Dublin. He worked with Scott Tallon and Walker in Dublin and London between 1984-89, before setting up his own practice in London. He teaches at the Bartlett School of Architecture.
